Revision of Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR) - Istituto di Scienza e Tecnologie dell'Informazione (ISTI) from Wed, 2013-09-04 09:58

The Institute of Information Science and Technologies (CNR-ISTI) is located in Pisa, Italy, and its main mission is to producing scientific excellence and playing an active role in technology transfer. Part of the largest research institution in Italy (the National Research Council, or CNR), CNR-ISTI is organised in 16 technology centers or labs, each of them pursuing a well defined set of scientific objectives. State-of-the-art technology development and training are other activities performed by the centers.

The team participating in this activity belongs to the 'Multimedia Networked Information System Laboratory', which consists of 60 researchers and technicians conducting research and development of (i) technologies for the management, distribution and fruition of multimedia information, i.e., information represented not only in textual form but also in other forms, like images, audio/video, etc. and (ii) new software architectures and system services supporting large distributed multimedia information systems and data infrastructures. This team has a long experience in participating to many EU-funded projects relevant to the topics addressed in the BIH2013 initiative.

In particular, the team also coordinated from the scientific point of view the stream of projects DILIGENT-D4Science-D4Science-II-iMarine / EUBrazilOpenBio that has been played a central role in the definition and implementation of Virtual Research Environments on Hybrid Data Infrastructures. Moreover, the team has been involved in the ENVRI project. Other projects the team has taken part in 7th FP are: EFG, HOPE, DRIVER I/II, OpenAIRE/plus, EuropeanaV1, SAPIR, ASSETS, HOPE, VENUS-C, DL.org and GRDI2020.

The team is leading the development and operation of the D4Science infrastructure, a gCube-based Hybrid Data Infrastructure that by leveraging existing infrastructures and information systems is capable to effectively support the operation of Virtual Research Environments supporting domains including Biodiversity ones. This infrastructure offers a rich array of services including BiolCube which focuses on the management and interpretation of biological and ecological data in the environment; StatsCube which is a complete full life-cycle data framework, from observational data to aggregated data repositories enriched with validation and analytical tools; GeosCube which is tightly connected to the BiolCube and realises a framework, based on OGC compliant tools and services, to manage the storage and interpretation of geospatial explicit information, including WPS processing; ConnectCube which brings semantic technologies for publishing structured data so that it can be interlinked and become more useful to end-users, enabling them to produce LOD, to share information in a way that can be read automatically by computers. This enables data from different sources to be connected and queried.
